Multiphase Loop Reactor
Cortest offers a complete turnkey Multiphase Loop Reactor (MLR). It consists of a Cortest high-pressure high-temperature autoclave, which is connected to a Recirculating Test Loop (RTL).  The figure below shows the schematic of the Multiphase Loop Reactor (MLR).

The RTL reservoir has different ports for liquid in, gas in and drain.  From the 316 S.S. reservoir, the liquid flows through a micro-filter and goes then through the diaphragm pump, which regulates the flow rate to the desired value. The valve # 8 pressure regulator is present to regulate the pressure and to compensate for overpressure. A pressure gauge displays the pressure at the pump exit. A pre-heater can be optionally included for temperature control of the liquid injected in the autoclave. Shut-off valve and check valve are included for safe and easy-to-use operations of the injected fluid.

The autoclave disposes of different ports for perfect monitoring of the experiment parameters. A magnetic stirrer with an adjustable rotation speed maintains uniform solution chemistry. Ports are used for thermocouple, pressure gauge, liquid in and out, gas in and out, corrosion probe, and drain. One port is also connected to a safety rupture disk. Corrosion rates can be measured on-line with LPR, EIS, or EN instrumentation systems.

The solution exiting the autoclave can flow through two optional systems: a heat exchanger and a test spool for specific corrosion testing. The solution exiting the autoclave is either reinjected into the reservoir or directed to the drain. Solution from the autoclave is often at high temperatures and a heat exchanger is included for solution cooling in the loop. A test loop is installed as a side-stream for additional corrosion testing.

The different control apparatus consist of:

  • Stirrer motor control

  • - tachometer (for motor speed measurement)
    - LED display of the rotation speed (in RPM)

  • Vessel temperature control:

  • - LED display of vessel temperature from the thermocouples inserted in the vessel (thermocouple body in Hastelloy C-276)
    - Safety shut-off protection
    - Thermocouples are placed in the heating band for precise control of the temperature
    - Microprocessor based auto-tune PID controller: automatic and/or manual tuning procedure of the heating band. It ensures that no significant temperature overshoot occurs and it eliminates significant temperature oscillations.

  • Vessel pressure control:

  • - LED display of vessel pressure
    - Safety shut-off protection

  • Pre-heater temperature control:

  • - Thermocouples are placed in the heating band for precise control of the heating band temperature
    - Microprocessor based auto-tune PID controller

  • Corrosion Measurement Instrumentation may include:

  • Electrochemical Techniques
    - Potentiostat for Linear Polarization Resistance (LPR) measurements and galvanostatic, potentiostatic, potentiodynamic tests
    - Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS)
    - Electrochemical Noise (ECN)
